Schools in Baldwin County to Celebrate International Walk to School Day

Sep 25, 2023, 10:27 AM

International Walk and Roll to School Day raises awareness for the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasizes the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, and concern for the environment. These events build connections between families, schools, and the broader community.

Schools in Baldwin County will celebrate International Walk and Roll to School Day during the month of October 2023. Students, parents, and teachers at participating schools will walk to school along with community leaders and volunteers.

This event is being organized by the Baldwin County Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Coali􀆟on, a partnership between Baldwin County Trailblazers, the Eastern Shore MPO and all three public school systems: Baldwin County Public Schools, Gulf Shores City Schools, and Orange Beach City Schools. The SRTS Coaliton encourages all schools within Baldwin County to explore options for reducing barriers that keep students from having safe walking and biking routes to their local schools.

The Baldwin County Trailblazers have a 20+ year history of advocating for SRTS. The Trailblazers have operated a daily Walking School Bus at Fairhope West Elementary for 10 years. In the Spring of 2023 Gulf Shores City Schools also implemented a Walking School Bus program, making these the only two Walking School Bus programs in the state.

Parents can contact their child’s school to find out if they will be choosing a date in October to participate.
