Effective immediately, the Baldwin County Highway Department will be restricting the weight limit of the Scenic 98 bridge adjacent to the Grand Hotel Resort & Spa to 20 tons. The new weight restriction will still allow use by passenger vehicles, school buses, and small box trucks, but will restrict use by larger vehicles such as 18-wheelers, dump trucks, concrete trucks, and other heavy vehicles. Larger vehicles that need access to Scenic 98 south of the bridge can do so via Section Street and/or US Highway 98 to County Road 32 west.
During a recent safety inspection, the Baldwin County Highway Department’s bridge safety inspection team identified advanced degradation of some bridge components due to saltwater intrusion. The weight restriction is being implemented immediately while engineers from the Baldwin County Highway Department, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), and other consultant engineers perform a more detailed analysis.
We recognize the impact the weight restriction has on commerce, but ensuring the safety of our residents and visitors who travel our roadways is our number one priority.
