The Baldwin County Commission and the Town of Magnolia Springs are excited to announce they have entered into an Intergovernmental Roadway Construction Agreement to construct approximately 2,600 feet of roadway and pedestrian improvements on County Road 49 from U.S. Route 98 to Magnolia River.
The County Road 49 project will be the third project of the Baldwin County Commission’s 30 Cubed Program which is aimed at fostering collaboration with municipalities across the county to enhance the capacity and connectivity of our roadway system.
“This project has been on our Comprehensive Plan year after year, but we had no way to fund it until the County Commission came to us with this new program,” said Mayor Ross Houser.
The County Road 49 Roadway and Pedestrian Improvements project will enhance roadway capacity and pedestrian safety through a combination of access management and a multi-use trail. A continuous landscape median that will convert to turn lanes at roadway intersections encouraging slower driving speeds while still improving roadway capacity. The existing concrete sidewalk will be replaced with a wider, multi-use path that will be located farther from the travel lane.
The total estimated cost of the project is $4,200,000.00 with the Town of Magnolia Springs funding $2,100,000.00 and the County funding the remaining $2,100,000.00. Eligible project costs include right-of-way acquisition, design, permitting, construction and construction engineering and inspection.
As Baldwin County continues to grow, initiatives like the 30 Cubed Program are vital to ensuring a resilient, well-connected, and efficient transportation network.
The 30 Cubed Program encourages voluntary partnerships with any municipality across Baldwin County, offering funding and support for roadway enhancements that align with regional transportation goals relating to capacity and connectivity improvements. By focusing on cooperative planning and resource sharing, 30 Cubed not only addresses current traffic demands but also prepares the region for future growth.
