Baldwin County Commission approved a Pet-Friendly Emergency Shelter Plan during its meeting on August 5, 2025. This initiative represents a major advancement in the county’s efforts to support residents and their companion animals during emergencies and evacuations.
Developed in partnership with the Baldwin County Animal Shelter and the Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), the Pet-Friendly Shelter is designed to accommodate domestic cats and dogs for persons who are staying at the shelter of last resort during natural disasters such as hurricanes. The shelter will be activated as a last-resort option and will operate out of the Baldwin County Coliseum, 19477 Fairground Road in Robertsdale.
Shelter Highlights:
•Shelter Location: Baldwin County Coliseum
•Pets Accepted: Domestic cats and dogs (limit 2 per household)
•Vaccination Requirement: Up-to-date rabies and core vaccinations are required
•Pre-Registration: Available on-site during admission
•Care Responsibility: Pet owners must bring crates, food, water, and supplies, and are responsible for their pets' care throughout the shelter stay
Additionally, BRATS (Baldwin Regional Area Transit System) will provide transportation to the shelter for residents and their crated pets during declared evacuations. To arrange transportation, residents can call 251-972-6817.
This shelter is not available for exotic pets, livestock, or animals considered aggressive or dangerous. For those with horses or exotic animals, Baldwin County EMA encourages residents to make alternative sheltering arrangements in advance.
