General Facility Guidelines

• The facility should provide improved protection from the elements.
• The condition of the facility should be suitable for occupation, and nothing in the facility should pose a direct threat to the health and safety of those seeking refuge.
• There must be a secondary exit from the facility to provide for safe exit in the event of a fire or other emergency.
• There must be smoke detectors that comply with applicable building codes.
• There should be sufficient sanitary facilities that are in proper operating condition and should be ADA-accessible whenever possible.

• Three people identified to be 24/7 points of contact for your facility.
• A signed copy of the Safer Places Guidelines.
• A signed copy of the Shelter Baldwin County EMA Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
• At least 3 exterior photos of your facility.
• Photos of your parking lot and any specifically marked parking areas for persons with disabilities.
• At least 3 photos of the room(s) or area(s) that you would like to utilize as the Safer Place.
• A facility floorplan that clearly indicates:
  • Which part of your facility you would like to utilize as the Safer Place.
  • What floor of your building the area(s)/room(s) are located.
  • Where you would like people to enter/exit your facility.
• Your facility's severe weather plan
• A facility manager to coordinate the staff and functions of the facility.
•  A few dedicated volunteers who are available to open and staff the facility during these severe weather events.
