Q. Am I required to have a Driver License in order to register a vehicle?
A: No. Click here for a list of acceptable documentation that can be used in lieu of a driver license.
Q. Does Alabama have specialty tags?
A. The Alabama Department of Revenue maintains the Plate Reservation Ordering System. You may go online yourself and view availability here. Customers may choose to reserve their plate and lettering online. However, to complete the reservation, customers must come into their local tag office & pay all applicable fees. Please note: If you are upgrading your tag & it is not due for renewal, the current plate must be turned in before the personalized tag can be processed.
Q. I moved out of state. What do I do with my current Alabama tags?
A. Currently registered Alabama tags without Alabama insurance will eventually go into a suspended status. Customers who wish to prevent that can mail their plates with a copy of their current out of state registration to our main office location at 220 Courthouse Square Bay Minette AL 36507 or PO Box 459 Bay Minette, AL 36507. Tags that do go into suspension will have to be addressed if the customer moves back to Alabama, but will not affect a customer's driver license.
Q. Can I renew my tag online if it is late or past due?
A. Yes, until your tag is more than a year expired, you are eligible for an online renewal.
Q. Can I renew my tag even if I didn't receive my renewal notice?
A. Yes, you can renew online or in person. Both options would require your Driver License / Identification number and your tag number.
