STAR ID's are issued by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency

Driving State ID Locations

Alabama STAR ID (REAL ID)

A STAR ID is an Alabama driver license or ID card that meets Federal REAL ID requirements. STAR IDs are identified by a gold star in the upper-right corner of the card.

⭐ When Do I Need a STAR ID?

A STAR ID is optional, but recommended for convenience when traveling.  You do not need a STAR ID for everyday driving, voting, or general identification. As of  May 7, 2025, individuals age 18 and older will need a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable form of identification (such as a valid U.S. passport) to:

  • ✈️ Board domestic flights within the United States
  • 🏢 Enter certain federal buildings and secure facilities
  • 🎖️ Enter military bases

You DO NOT need a STAR ID to:

  • Drive
  • Vote
  • Identify yourself for general identification purposes
  • Enter a state building or federal building that does not require an ID to enter.
  • Receive State or Federal Services

You DO need a STAR ID to:

  • Board a commercial aircraft
  • Visit military bases or secure federal facilities

⭐How to Get a STAR ID 
  • If you do not already have a STAR ID, you must visit an ALEA Driver License Office in Alabama.
  • Confirm you have ALL Required Documents to avoid delays:
    • 🆔 Identity and date of birth
    • 🔢 Social Security number
    • 🏠 Principal residence address

    If you already have a STAR ID, you can renew it online or in person:

    You may be eligible to renew your STAR ID online if you have not used online renewal within the past 8 years.  Visit alabamadl.alea.gov
