IMPORTANT! A STAR ID is Alabamaβs optional, federally compliant form of identification. After May 7, 2025 if you do not have a STAR ID, you will be required to produce additional forms of Acceptable Identification (such as a passport) when going through airport security and entering certain Federal Buildings.
Your standard Alabama driver license remains valid for everyday identification and authorizes you to legally drive. However, it will include the phrase "NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION" on the front. This just means it does not meet federal requirements for purposes such as passing through airport security or accessing certain federal buildings.
If you plan to visit a federal facilityβor any location where identification requirements may varyβyou should contact that facility directly to confirm what forms of ID are accepted.
