When/How do I get a Certificate of Occupancy?

A Certificate of Occupancy (C.O.) is issued for new construction and for a change of occupancy classification only. A building or structure shall not be used or occupied, in whole or in part, and a change in the existing occupancy classification of a building or structure shall not be made until the Building Official has issued a Certificate of Occupancy.

A C.O. will be issued after all required permits have been obtained, all required documentation is on file, the final site inspection by the Planning & Zoning Department (if applicable) has been approved, and the final building inspection by the Building Department has been approved.

DO NOT EXPECT the C.O. to be issued on the same day as the final inspection(s). Please allow up to two business days after the final building inspection and any required site inspection have been approved for the issuance of the C.O. The C.O. will be emailed to the permit holder once complete.

Notes:

• C.O.s are issued for new construction of buildings.
• C.O.s are issued for a change of occupancy classification (e.g., an office building converted to a restaurant).
• C.O.s are not issued for additions, alterations, repairs, accessory structures, manufactured homes, or modular buildings.
