Effective January 1, 2024 some boats in Alabama are eligible/required to be titled. Please click here for more information from the Alabama Department of Revenue. If our office processes a title on a boat, the transaction is subject to HIN inspection rules. 

Boat (including jet skis) Registration Requirements for new purchases: (on non-titled boats)

  1. New boat purchased from a dealer:  A bill of sale and the manufactures statement of origin from the dealer is required.  If two or more names are listed as buyers and the word "OR" is not printed on the bill of sale, both owners must be present or a power of attorney must be presented for the owners who are not present. Sales tax may be owed.
  2. Used boat purchased from a dealer:  A bill of sale from the dealer and a copy of the most recent registration or title is required.  If two or more names are listed as buyers and the word "OR" is not printed on the bill of sale, both owners must be present or a power of attorney must be presented for the owners who are not present. Sales tax may be owed.
  3. Used boat purchased from individual: A completed bill of sale and the previous registration/title (in seller's name) is required. If two or more names are listed as buyers and the word "OR" is not printed on the bill of sale, both owners must be present or a power of attorney must be presented for the owners who are not present. Sales tax may be owed.
Boat (including jet skis) Registration Requirements for new residents:
     1. The previous registration and/or title.
     2. Owner must appear in person or provide a power of attorney to whoever is coming in.

Please note:

Boats year 1973 and up must have a 12 digit hull number.  If you need to have a state assigned hull number, please follow the instructions on this form.
Boats renew by 1st letter of last name.  Commercially registered boats are renewed in October. 
Boat registrations are not prorated.  
Boats are not required for inspection in order to register.

Registration Costs: (not including sales tax) Plus a $25.00 title fee when title work is applicable.
$25 (boats under 16ft)
$30 (boats 16ft - 25ft)
$80 (boats 26ft - 40ft)
$105 (boats 40ft and up)
