If you are in possession of the original title, please bring that. Please note: a copy will not be accepted if a name change or change of ownership has occurred. The original title will be required. If a name change has a occurred, name change documentation will be required.

For assistance obtaining a copy of your title from your lienholder, please email foleyprobate@baldwincountyal.gov

• Customer should request a copy of the title from the lienholder.
• If no lienholder is listed, original title will be required. 
• Out of state title must show the lessor and lessee.
• If lessee isn't shown on title, vehicle must be retitled in Alabama and lessee will be added, therefore an original title is required.
• Power of attorney from lessor, giving lessee permission to register vehicle, is required.
• Vehicle is required to be inspected.

• bring the original title or Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO)
• bring the bill of sale (if vehicle was purchased and never registered in another state, a bill of sale is required to determine sales tax liability.)

• owner(s) named on title must come in person, or give notarized power of attorney to appointee.  By law, the specific individual(s) who is the legal owner of a vehicle must personally apply for his/her Alabama title certificate and license plate.  Unless a power of attorney form is completed by the legal owner and notarized, no other person may complete these transactions (not spouse or other family member).  If two people are named on the title and names are joined by “and,” both must come in or give the other person a power of attorney; if the names are joined by “or” either may come in.

Alabama is a title state.  A title is a document which proves ownership. Alabama Dept of Revenue requires anyone who owns a motor vehicle to obtain a title for all motor vehicles that are not more than thirty-five (35) model years old. No title records are required to be maintained by the Department of Revenue for any motor vehicle more than thirty-five (35) model years old.  See Alabama Department of Revenue Title Exemption.

A new Alabama resident is required to title and register his vehicle within thirty (30) days of moving into the state. 

Boats are not titled.

You may apply for an Alabama title at any motor vehicle office in Baldwin County.  Titles are printed in Montgomery and mailed to the vehicle owners or lien holders.  The fee for applying for a title is $18.00.

Utility Trailers: Section 40-12-240 defines a utility trailer as a trailer primarily designed to be drawn by a passenger car or pickup truck, including but not limited to:

• luggage trailers
• folding or collapsible camping trailers
• other small trailers of similar size and function
• this does not include boat trailers

           Registration Requirements:

• previous registration from former state
• Trailer required to be present for a VIN inspection
•  No title will be issued on bumper pulled trailers
•  Insurance is not required.

Semi/Gooseneck Trailers: Section 40-12-252 applies to, but is not limited to, the following:

• Truck Trailers
• Semitrailers
• Tractor Trailers
• Horse Trailers (if gooseneck)

           Registration Requirements:

• Models 20 years or newer: original out of state title, if not financed. If financed, a copy of the title is required.
• Models 20 years of older: previous out of state registration.
• Trailer required to be present for a VIN inspection
• Insurance is not required.

Travel trailer/Campers: Section 40-12-252 requires that Alabama residents register privately owned travel trailers.

            Registration Requirements:

• Models 20 years or newer: original out of state title, if not financed. If financed, a copy of the title is required. (See "is your vehicle financed" for more information)
• Models 20 years or older: Previous out of state registration.
• Trailer required to be present for a VIN inspection
• Insurance is not required.

Recreational Vehicles (Motor Home): Section 40-12-248 defines a motor home as a self-propelled camper. 

          Registration Requirements:

• Models newer than 35 years: original out of state title, if not financed. If financed, a copy of the title is required. (See "is your vehicle financed" for more information)
• Models 35 years or older: previous out of state registration.
• Motor Home is required to be present for a VIN inspection 
• Insurance is required
• G.V.W.R. (gross vehicle weight rating)
